Summer Course: “Twentieth-Century Catholic Literature”

July 22 at 9:30 AM - July 26 at 3:30 PM

Join us for a course on “Twentieth-Century Catholic Literature,” as part of the John Paul II Institute’s Continuing Education Program.

The class will center on three renowned Catholic writers from the first half of the twentieth century: Charles Péguy, Georges Bernanos, and Evelyn Waugh.

The focus will be, more particularly, on Péguy’s famous trilogy of Mysteries, Bernanos’ The Diary of a Country Priest, and Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. Our goal will, in the first place, be to gain a deeper understanding of these texts, but we will also consider the men who wrote these masterpieces, men who were famously powerful personalities. In doing so, we will gain a familiarity with the vital concerns that shaped their work and find a time perhaps not so unlike our own. Throughout, the hope is to encounter authors who offer a profound vision of life lived in and under Christ in the modern world.

Note: Because of the amount of material covered in the course, participants in the class should have done a majority of the reading for the course before it begins.

The course meets Monday through Friday, July 22-26, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and 1:30-3:00 p.m. Class will be taught in person and offered online simultaneously.

The course fee is $150. To register, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check, cash, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment, please click here.

Registration for the course closes Friday, July 19.

Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington accept this course toward VCEA licensure or CEU requirements for teachers.
