Continuing Education Course: Education, Politics, and the Family

September 7, 2022 at 6:30 PM - December 7, 2022 at 8:30 PM

The Fall 2022 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Education, Politics, and the Person”.  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 7 to December 7, 2022.

The relationship of the family to political society is unquestionably one of the most important questions in both secular political thought and Catholic social teaching. This has become evident in the past few years through the “education wars” that are an ever-present feature of our democracy. Some questions concerning this course will be: What is the role of the family in the educating children to be members of society? What does Christianity reveal about the nature of the family and its responsibility for the education of children and its responsibility to the state? What is the importance of the Church’s teaching that the family is the ecclesia domestica? By examining texts from the tradition (Plato, Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas), contemporary political thought, as well as the Papal and Conciliar teachings of the 19th and 20th century, the course will address those issues.

Class will be taught in person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006, and offered online simultaneously.

The class fee is $150. To register, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check, cash, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment, please click here.

This course can be taken toward renewal requirements for VCEA licensure. Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington accept the course for CEU credits.
