How and is human flourishing related to the virtues or “morality”? What\, if anything\, does it mean to “be moral” and how are the virtues related to happiness? These questions motivate this course’s survey of the virtue ethics tradition in western thought\, centering on a close reading of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Alasdair MacIntyre’s seminal work After Virtue\, an analysis of modern moral discourse which situates Aristotelianism in contemporary life and society. It will also explore works by other important thinkers such as Josef Pieper and Elizabeth Anscombe. It is a reality the child first learns at his or her mother’s breast. Why then has it been so widely nullified and its expression increasingly sanctioned? What caused this strange development? The answers lie deep in the theological and philosophical assumptions of modernity. \nThe 2025 John Paul II Institute’s annual Summer Fellowship “Gender\, Technology\, and Culture” will engage deeply with the theological and philosophical questions raised by the emergence and seeming success of gender ideology. We will focus on the relationship between the current gender movement\, modernity’s dominant scientific and technological understanding of reality\, and the rejection of cultural form. \nThe Fellowship will include lectures\, ample time for discussion\, cultural events around Washington D.C.\, and social time among students and with faculty. \n \nThe Fellowship will take place May 20-24\, at the John Paul II Institute\, on the campus of The Catholic University of America. College juniors\, seniors\, and recent graduates in all majors are welcome to apply. \nApplication \nProspective Summer Fellows should complete the application form by March 3. This “return to the sources” sought to reinvigorate the highly specialized and technical theology of the day with the vigor and spirit of the Church’s earliest masters. Rather than discovering merely the primitive origins of what would be perfected in later theology\, these scholars discovered in the Fathers a rich\, integrated theological vision in which the meaning of Christ transfigured the whole of creation and the innermost depths of man’s life. Our goal will\, in the first place\, be to gain a deeper understanding of these texts\, but we will also consider the men who wrote these masterpieces\, men who were famously powerful personalities. In doing so\, we will gain a familiarity with the vital concerns that shaped their work and find a time perhaps not so unlike our own. It is a reality the child first learns at his or her mother’s breast. Why then has it been so widely nullified and its expression increasingly sanctioned? What caused this strange development? The answers lie deep in the theological and philosophical assumptions of modernity. \n \nThe 2024 John Paul II Institute’s annual Summer Fellowship “Gender\, Technology\, and Culture” will engage deeply with the theological and philosophical questions raised by the emergence and seeming success of gender ideology. We will focus on the relationship between the current gender movement\, modernity’s dominant scientific and technological understanding of reality\, and the rejection of cultural form. \nThe Fellowship will include lectures\, ample time for discussion\, cultural events around Washington D.C.\, and social time among students and with faculty. \nThe Fellowship will take place May 20-24\, at the John Paul II Institute\, on the campus of The Catholic University of America. College juniors\, seniors\, and recent graduates in all majors are welcome to apply. \nApplication \nProspective Summer Fellows should complete the application form by March 1. (Deadline extended until March 15. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and as places remain available until March 15.) Acceptance notifications will be sent by March 15 (for applications received by March 1.) \nCosts \nAll Summer Fellows will receive a scholarship that covers the cost of housing in the dorms of The Catholic University of America\, meals\, and tuition. I especially enjoyed the time at the National Gallery of Art because I was able to view the art through the anthropological lens that we were discussing this week.
