SUMMARY:Continuing Education Course: Ressourcement and the Vision of the Fathers
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2024 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Ressourcement and the Vision of the Fathers.”  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 11 to December 4\, 2024. \nIn the 20th century theologians in both the East and West turned their attention to the writings of the earliest Church Fathers. This “return to the sources” sought to reinvigorate the highly specialized and technical theology of the day with the vigor and spirit of the Church’s earliest masters. Rather than discovering merely the primitive origins of what would be perfected in later theology\, these scholars discovered in the Fathers a rich\, integrated theological vision in which the meaning of Christ transfigured the whole of creation and the innermost depths of man’s life. Such engagement was indispensable for the developments of key themes in 20th-century theology in the areas of anthropology\, ecclesiology\, and sacramentality. This course will introduce some significant patristic authors including Athanasius\, Gregory of Nyssa\, Dionysius\, Maximus the Confessor\, and John of Damascus\, as well as their 20th-century reception by theologians such as Hans Urs von Balthasar\, Jean Daniélou\, and Georges Florovsky. \nThe course will be taught in person and offered online simultaneously. The in-person class meetings will be in McGivney Hall Room 006 on The Catholic University of America’s campus. \nThe class fee is $150. To register\, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment\, please click here. \nThis course can be taken toward renewal requirements for VCEA licensure. Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington accept the course for CEU credits. \nIf you have questions\, please contact information@johnpaulii.edu or call 202.526.3799.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: Christ\, the Destiny of the Human Person
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Jean Laffitte\, the emeritus Prelate of the Sovereign Order of Malta\, will join us for a discussion of his recent book Christ\, the Destiny of the Human Person: A Journey into Filial Anthropology on Wednesday\, October 9\, at 4:00 p.m. at the Saint John Paul II Shrine. Also taking part in the discussion will be Carl A. Anderson\, Past Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus; Rev. José Granados\, dcjm\, Superior General of the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary; and Canon George Woodall\, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Skegness\, UK\, and translator of the book under discussion. \nThe conversation will be followed by a reception. \n \nFrom the publisher: \n“The mystery of the human person becomes truly clear only in the mystery of the Incarnate Word.” Taken from the Constitution Gaudium et Spes of the Second Vatican Council\, this phrase is the foundation of Christian anthropology\, an area very often neglected in theological studies. Msgr. Jean Laffitte offers us a wealth of reflections on a wide range of themes including the family\, love\, life\, suffering and death\, the moral conscience\, society\, Christian action\, forgiveness and the Heart of Christ. What is striking on reading these pages is the great unity that emerges\, making this work a decisive contribution to Christian reflection on the nature of the human person\, their place in society\, aspirations and choices\, origin and destiny. \nThe light of Revelation illuminates every dimension of existence and of those fundamental human experiences so often evoked by Pope St John Paul II. At a time when\, one by one\, the pillars that support the complex nature of the human being are crumbling\, and in particular when the bonds of paternity and sonship are being eroded\, the author traces the contours of a true filial anthropology-the expression is destined to become a milestone-the only one capable of giving human persons an understanding of the meaning of their life\, as well as an answer to the questions and concerns in their mind and heart. The eternal Son reveals to us the secret of our created being: we are sons in the Son\, chosen and loved. \nThis volume is available for purchase from Gracewing.

SUMMARY:The Rediscovery of Reality: Education and the Catholic Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Teachers\, parents\, educational leaders\, and anyone interested in the formation of the human person are invited to join the John Paul II Institute for a conference that seeks a truly Catholic vision of education. \nThe great Robert Spaemann once defined education as an “introduction to reality.”  But what is the reality into which education introduces us?  The American philosopher John Dewey—pragmatist\, progressive\, and a principal architect of American public education—described the “intellectual modification of the last few centuries” as “revolutionary” because\, “it has substituted a conception of the world differing at every point” from the one that preceded it\, a world understood by Christianity as creation and defined by the Christian synthesis of Rome\, Athens\, and Jerusalem.  American education\, including Catholic education\, was developed within this revolutionary conception.  But now that this post-Christian civilization and its systems of education are in crisis\, the question arises.  What does education mean if Catholic Christianity is really true after all?  This question\, as Dewey’s remark suggests\, touches on “every point”:  the nature of education itself\, the corresponding pedagogy\, and the conception of the disciplines\, but most fundamentally\, the nature of the human being\, the meaning of history\, and the nature of the world itself.  If modern education is premised upon a revolutionary and now deep-seated reconception of the world\, then there can be no true restoration of a Catholic vision of education without an equally revolutionary reimagination of the world.  This conference will explore the various facets of this fundamental question in light of this fundamental need. \n\nConference Schedule\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nBreakout Sessions\nThe breakout sessions at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon are listed below. You will have the opportunity to select your preferred session on the conference registration form below. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nRegistration\nRegistration for this event is closed. \n\nAlumni Reunion\nFollowing the close of the conference\, graduates of the John Paul II Institute are cordially invited to an alumni reunion on the evening of Saturday\, November 9. SUMMARY:Continuing Education Course: Called to Love: Theology of the Body
DESCRIPTION:The Spring 2025 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Called to Love: Theology of the Body.”  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from January 22 to April 30\, 2025. \nThis course will provide a survey of John Paul II’s vision of the person and the vocation of human love drawn from the rich variety of philosophical\, theological\, and literary texts he gave to the Church over the course of his life. To begin\, the course will provide an outline of his phenomenological-philosophical view of personhood drawn primarily from his pre-papal work Love and Responsibility. Next\, we will examine the Pope’s theological approach to human love and the vocation inscribed within the sexual difference through select texts from his Wednesday Catechesis\, Man and Woman He Created Them. These theological and philosophical frameworks “take flesh” in the final part of the course\, in which we will read and discuss a number of literary texts written by Wojtyla/John Paul II including The Jeweler’s Shop. \nThe course will be taught in person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006 and offered online simultaneously. \nThe course fee is $150. \nIf you have questions\, please contact information@johnpaulii.edu

SUMMARY:Philosophy\, Revelation\, and the Christening of Thought
DESCRIPTION:The  Pontifical John Paul II Institute cordially invites you to a lecture by philosopher William Desmond on Thursday\, February 6\, at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Desmond\, who is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven and holds the David R. Cook Chair in Philosophy at Villanova University\, will speak on “Philosophy\, Revelation\, and the Christening of Thought.” \nDr. Desmond will offer reflections on the diverse relations possible between philosophy and Christianity in the light of Revelation. His lecture will address some traditional mediations of philosophy and Christianity and will also reflect on the significance of postmodern projects to de-Christianize Western culture\, as well as philosophy. In the light of these reflections\, is it still possible to speak of a Christening of thought? If possible\, what might this be like? \nThe lecture will be followed by a reception. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Building a Culture of Life in a Post-Roe World
DESCRIPTION:Please join the John Paul II Institute for a presentation by Jeanne Mancini on “Building a Culture of Life in a Post-Roe World” on Thursday\, April 24\, at 4 p.m. in Keane Auditorium. \nIn the nearly three years since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade\, pro-life political initiatives at the state level have had both notable successes and notable failures\, leaving the legal landscape on abortion with wide differences from state to state. Across all states\, however\, a fundamental question applies: how can our culture be transformed to one that affirms the dignity of human life and upholds families in need? In her presentation\, Jeanne Mancini will address both the current pro-life public policy arena and practical ways in which each of us can contribute to building a culture of life. \nMrs. Mancini\, a 2002 graduate of the Institute\, served as President of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund from 2012-2025. Previously\, she worked with the Family Research Council\,  where she focused on issues related to the inherent dignity of the human person\, including abortion\, women’s health\, and end-of-life issues\, and for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on global health policy\, as well as domestic and international health care issues.

SUMMARY:2025 Summer Fellowship: "Gender\, Technology\, and Culture"
DESCRIPTION:How do we find ourselves unable to affirm a fundamental element of human experience—the reality and givenness of our being differentiated as male and female\, husbands and wives\, mothers and fathers\, sons and daughters\, brothers and sisters? It is a reality the child first learns at his or her mother’s breast. Why then has it been so widely nullified and its expression increasingly sanctioned? What caused this strange development? The answers lie deep in the theological and philosophical assumptions of modernity. \nThe 2025 John Paul II Institute’s annual Summer Fellowship “Gender\, Technology\, and Culture” will engage deeply with the theological and philosophical questions raised by the emergence and seeming success of gender ideology. We will focus on the relationship between the current gender movement\, modernity’s dominant scientific and technological understanding of reality\, and the rejection of cultural form. \nThe Fellowship will include lectures\, ample time for discussion\, cultural events around Washington D.C.\, and social time among students and with faculty. \n \nThe Fellowship will take place May 20-24\, at the John Paul II Institute\, on the campus of The Catholic University of America. College juniors\, seniors\, and recent graduates in all majors are welcome to apply. \nApplication \nProspective Summer Fellows should complete the application form by March 3. (After deadline\, we will accept applications until all the spots are filled.) Acceptance notifications will be sent by March 17. \nCosts \nAll Summer Fellows will receive a scholarship that covers the cost of housing in the dorms of The Catholic University of America\, meals\, and tuition. Participants will be responsible for their own travel to Washington\, DC\, public transportation expenses\, and a $200 registration fee. A limited number of scholarships is available to assist applicants in financial need with the cost of registration. \nQuestions may be directed to Elena Martin at emartin@johnpaulii.edu or 202-526-3799. \nThe experience was an amazing introduction to the importance of the Catholic faith within our modern world. It was truly eye-opening and thought provoking\, and the week was filled with incredible lectures and discussions lead by the amazing professors at the institute. I couldn’t believe how enriching the entire experience was. I would recommend it to everyone. (Charles McIntyre\, 2024 Fellow). \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n“The fellowship program was perhaps the most fruitful experience I have ever had. The content of the lectures was both pertinent to today’s societal concerns\, as well as willing to ask the tough questions so as to unpack the nature of these different issues which we face. To enrich the experience even further\, these academic discussions were complemented by more human and expressive events such as going to the National Art Museum and the Opera. Finally\, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how genuine and unique each of the students in the fellowship were\, and how I would never have been able to meet so many interesting people my own age from different backgrounds without this opportunity. To anyone interested\, I couldn’t imagine finding a better place to spend five days growing intellectually\, culturally\, and socially\, and walk away with a better understanding of yourself and the world in which we live.” (Max Watson\, 2024 Fellow).

DESCRIPTION:As part of the new M.T.S. concentration in Catholic Liberal Education\, the Institute is offering two evening courses on education during the fall 2025 semester. \nCatholic Vision and Education in America (Michael Hanby)\, Tuesdays\, 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. \nThis course lays a foundation for the renewal of Catholic education by reflecting on the nature of education and the relationship between different historical conceptions of the educational task and the judgments that are operative in every philosophy of education: judgments about the nature of God\, the meaning of creation\, the identity of the human being\, and the kind of polity that is conducive to human flourishing. \nThe Nature and Art of Teaching in the Catholic Tradition (Andrew Shivone)\, Wednesdays\, 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. \nThe Church has always been concerned with the formation and education of persons. Unlike modern pedagogical theory\, which views teaching as empty method or technique\, the Church’s interest in teaching asks about the relationship between the craft of teaching and the truth that is taught. This course reflects on what methods a teacher can use to perfect his craft that will best fulfill the nature of education as an introduction to reality. \nProspective students should complete a non-degree seeking application by August 15th. A bachelor’s degree is required as a prerequisite. \nThese courses may be taken for audit or for credit. Information about costs can be found on our Tuition and Fees page. \nFor more information\, please contact Elena Martín at emartin@johnpaulii.edu.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education Course: Virtue Ethics: Aristotle to MacIntyre
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2025 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Virtue Ethics: Aristotle to MacIntyre.”  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 10 to December 3\, 2025. \nWhat does it mean for a human being to “flourish”? How and is human flourishing related to the virtues or “morality”? What\, if anything\, does it mean to “be moral” and how are the virtues related to happiness? These questions motivate this course’s survey of the virtue ethics tradition in western thought\, centering on a close reading of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Alasdair MacIntyre’s seminal work After Virtue\, an analysis of modern moral discourse which situates Aristotelianism in contemporary life and society. It will also explore works by other important thinkers such as Josef Pieper and Elizabeth Anscombe. Students will come away from the course with a basic grasp on the nature and place of the virtues in the western philosophical tradition and in Catholic moral teaching. \n \nThe course will be taught in person and offered online simultaneously.

SUMMARY:McGivney Lectures: Conscience as a Political Problem: Faith\, Culture\, and Christian Statesmanship
DESCRIPTION:Carl A. Anderson\, founding Dean of the John Paul II Institute and Past Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus\, will present the 2025 McGivney Lecture Series\, entitled “Conscience as a Political Problem: Faith\, Culture\, and Christian Statesmanship.” \nThe 65th anniversary of the election of the first Catholic president marks an occasion to examine the historical challenges to Catholic participation in presidential politics\, how these challenges were overcome\, and the contemporary role of Catholics in public life\, giving special attention to how that role has shaped the national debate on abortion. The lectures suggest the primacy of conscience in guiding the responsibilities of public officials and explore the influence of John Henry Newman\, John Courtney Murray\, Josef Fuchs\, and Reinhard Niebuhr\, among others\, on these questions. The lectures conclude with the witness of St. Thomas More and the anthropology of Vatican II and St. John Paul II as suggesting ways Catholics can advance future discussions of America’s public philosophy. \nThe lecture series will take place on September 22\, 24\, and 25\, at 7:00 p.m.\, and September 26\, at 4:00 p.m.\, in Keane Auditorium\, McGivney Hall. \n\nMonday\, September 22: “John F. Kennedy\, Counterfeit Conscience and the Catholic Vote”\nWednesday\, September 24: “Conscience and the Politics of Dissent”\nThursday\, September 25: “Abortion’s Partisan Divide and a Cardinal’s Conscience”\nFriday\, September 26: “Conscience and Public Philosophy: Whose Myth\, Which Anthropology?”\n\nAdmission to the lectures is free\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:Giving One’s Word: Psychological Analogy as Social Analogy in Aquinas's Trinitarian Theology
DESCRIPTION:The Pontifical John Paul II Institute will host a book discussion of Michael J. Higgins‘s new book Giving One’s Word: Psychological Analogy as Social Analogy in Aquinas’s Trinitarian Theology on Monday\, October 27\, at 7:00 p.m. in Keane Auditorium\, McGivney Hall. The event is co-sponsored by the St. Jerome Institute. \nGiving One’s Word\, published by The Catholic University of America Press\, seeks to trace the contemporary “social analogy” in Trinitarian theology to the “psychological analogy” found in St. Thomas: “According to the vast majority of recent Trinitarian theologians\, to believe in the Trinity is to believe that God is Love: it is to believe in three divine Persons who know each other\, love each other\, and give themselves to each other. St. Thomas Aquinas is rarely invoked as a patron of such a social approach to the Trinity. Aquinas’s Trinitarian theology\, after all\, revolves around the immanent processions of a Word and Love within the unity of the divine essence. Many have assumed that this “psychological analogy” is removed from—or even incompatible with—interpersonal knowledge\, love\, and self-giving. Some have concluded that Aquinas is therefore unable to accommodate a social Trinity. Others have argued that he is open to a social Trinity\, but that his psychological categories need to be complemented by a more overtly social framework. This study\, however\, shows that these psychological categories themselves are shot through with interpersonal knowledge\, love\, and self-giving.” \nThe book discussion will feature a short lecture by the author\, who will then be joined by Andrew Shivone for a discussion of the book. Dr. Shivone is President of the St. Jerome Institute\, where Dr. Higgins teaches humanities and theology. \nThe event will be followed by a reception.

SUMMARY:Resonance According to Hartmut Rosa
DESCRIPTION:The  Pontifical John Paul II Institute cordially invites you to a lecture by theologian Martin Bieler Thursday\, February 5\, at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Bieler will speak on “Resonance According to Hartmut Rosa.” \nThe frenetic pace of contemporary life has built a world of estrangement among people and from reality itself. German sociologist Hartmut Rosa suggests a dramatic reintegration through “resonance”: “When we love\, something like a vibrating wire arises between us and the world.” And then it can happen that the world suddenly begins to speak to us again. And in that speaking yet someone else may speak to us.  \nSwiss theologian Martin Bieler holds the 2026 David L. Schindler Fellowship for Distinguished Scholars at the Institute. \nThe lecture will be followed by a reception. \n
