SUMMARY:"Faith and American Culture" Summer Intensive Course
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a week-long intensive course to explore the relationship between Catholicism and the American tradition. \nThis course ponders the main assumptions of America’s liberal tradition as articulated by its formative thinkers and various interpreters. The reflection is primarily ontological and theological in nature. Its terms are set by the Catholic view of being and the person as gift (as developed in the Second Vatican Council and in Communio theology)\, on the one hand\, and by the patterns of life\, thought\, and action in America\, on the other. \nThe course meets Monday through Friday\, July 24-28\, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. Class will be taught in person and offered online simultaneously. \nThe course fee is $150. To register\, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment\, please click here. \nRegistration for the course closes Thursday\, July 20. \nNumerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington accept this course toward VCEA licensure or CEU requirements for teachers. \nFor more information\, email: information@johnpaulii.edu

SUMMARY:Continuing Education Course: Faith and American Culture
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2023 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Faith and American Culture”.  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 6 to December 6\, 2023. \nThis course ponders the main assumptions of America’s liberal tradition as articulated by its formative thinkers along with its various interpreters. The reflection—theological\, philosophical\, and historical in nature—is informed both by the Christian proposition that man is imago Dei and by the view that man cannot but be shaped by his culture. The primary concern of the course is whether Christian anthropology is commensurate with the principles that underlie America’s founding. \nClass will be taught in person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006\, and offered online simultaneously. \nThe class fee is $150. To register\, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment\, please click here. \nThis course can be taken toward renewal requirements for VCEA licensure. Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington accept the course for CEU credits. \nIf you have questions please contact information@johnpaulii.edu. \n \n

SUMMARY:Parental Rights and Family Relations in a Postmodern Age
DESCRIPTION:What is at stake when the family and the law intersect? As part of its ongoing cultural engagement\, the John Paul II Institute will host a gathering of scholars in law\, politics\, philosophy\, and theology to discuss “Parental Rights and Family Relations” on Sept. 22-23. Co-sponsors of the event are the Center for Law and the Human Person at CUA’s Columbus School of Law and the Alliance Defending Freedom. \nLimited seats are available for students of the Institute and the Columbus School of Law to audit the discussions. Interested students may contact mrice@johnpaulii.edu to sign up to attend. \nEvent Description\nWhen Terry McAuliffe stated during his 2021 Virginia Gubernatorial campaign that he didn’t “think parents should be telling schools what they should teach\,” he ignited a small firestorm that may have cost him the election. The statement betrayed the smug and high-handed attitude of education bureaucrats and teachers’ union officials. Yet\, McAuliffe’s gaffe represented a relatively mild version of a larger trend in which more radical calls for “rethinking” the family in toto echo through the academy and government. The trend is not only in the direction of assimilating parental authority to public institutions; it also includes\, perhaps paradoxically\, privatizing and contractualizing currents\, for example in surrogacy arrangements. In either case\, the effect is to diminish or deny the importance of the natural relationship between the parents and the child and\, by implication\, in the other familial relationships as well. \nMcAuliffe’s statement alludes to parental objections concerning the education offered by public schools. But American law poses many challenges for parents beyond books and curricula. The Covid pandemic’s various mandates were simply the latest twist on the long-running issue of parental authority over\, or even knowledge of\, medical and other life-altering decisions\, for example in cases of abortion or “gender transition.” Then there is the question of the basis for deciding custody battles\, the termination of parent-child relationships\, the requirements for adoption\, and the larger ambiguities and implications of the “child’s best interests” and “parental fitness” standards. Finally\, there are the many questions raised by new biotechnological practices\, which have twisted and fragmented parenthood into a cluster of gametic\, genetic\, gestational\, contractual\, psychological\, associational\, and other “parts” or aspects. \nEach of these vexed areas\, as well as others\, raises issues concerning the basis and nature of parental rights and duties under American law. But each also raises profound philosophical and theological questions. The same-sex marriage movement\, for example\, forced a wider reassessment of the nature of the parent-child relationship\, of its normative value and anthropological centrality. Of course\, “rethinking” the parent-child relationship has implications for all familial relationships and reveals a drift toward the displacement of natural familial relations by non-familial institutions. Certainly\, these issues\, played out in their distinctively American ways\, are nevertheless universal in their scope. Pierre Manent\, for example\, has spoken of our “metaphysical” ambition “to inscribe in positive law the thesis according to which the just or legitimate human order excludes all reference to a natural norm or purpose.” \nOf course\, law has always played a crucial role\, whether to set conditions for marriage or divorce\, to mediate marriage’s effects\, for example inheritance (cf. Leo XIII\, Arcanum divinae sapientia)\, to establish lines of succession\, or to intervene in cases of abuse or neglect. But more fundamentally\, familial relationships are not only “natural” with an overlay of positive law. Rather\, the very genesis of law is deeply involved with the developing sense of both marriage and the family. Indeed\, this simultaneity of development is a mark of civilization in its origins. This observation invites reflection on precisely how the family\, law\, and civilization do and should relate. \nOur symposium seeks to address these questions and more\, specifically from the point of view of law\, philosophy\, and theology. \nSchedule

SUMMARY:Approaching the Mystery of the Person: Person and Act at the Center of Karol Wojtyła's Thought
DESCRIPTION:The Introduction to Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical magnum opus\, Person and Act\, offers a bird’s-eye view of how his study differs from previous ones. If the person traditionally lies in the background\, as a presupposition for the act to be human\, Wojtyła explains that his study will reverse that approach. It will show how the act “reveals the person; it will be a study of the person through the act” (103). What is it that distinguishes the human act from the happenings in nature or the actions of animals? Wojtyła begins with the fact of moral experience and plumbs its richness\, not to develop normative judgments or a systematic ethics\, but to understand the anthropology implicit within the experience itself. His 1965 “Synopsis” tells us that a “correct interpretation” of this experience “demands a grasp of that which is essential to the person.” It “does not reveal the person to us in an accidental\, collateral or secondary way—but\, properly\, in a most essential way.”  It therefore provides the possibility of “build[ing] an anthropology that is as essential and integral as possible” (4). Person and Act “aims in the broadest sense to explicate the reality that the person is. The act will be the source from which we shall draw cognition about the reality that is the person . . .” (106). \nHence\, if we ask\, why center a study of man on the human act?\, the answer will be that the act constitutes\, for Wojtyła\, a privileged source for the discovery of the person. It is here that man experiences his personal existence most acutely\, both in his immanence in his act and also in the transcendence his act implies\, its personalistic values and their posture toward objective good. It is in the act that the person is most present to himself and to his world. \nOur conference seeks to explore Person and Act’s disclosure of the person and its importance for the rest of Wojtyła’s and Saint John Paul II’s philosophical approach to the person. \nSchedule\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\nRegistration\n10/31/23: Online registration is now closed.  Please email mrice@johnpaulii.edu for instructions on how to register.

SUMMARY:Evening Course: Law\, Family and the Person
DESCRIPTION:January 9\, 2023 (5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.) \nNon-degree seeking students and auditors are invited to join us for evening course with our Dean\, Dr. David Crawford\, on Law\, Family & the Person. \nG.K. Chesterton once predicted that the proposition “leaves are green in summer” will one day become a matter of religious conviction over which swords will be drawn. His remark foreshadows our current denial of basic elements of human nature and experience such as the reality of men and women and the nature of marriage. How did we get to this point\, and what role has law played? Join us for a critical examination of modern American law in its background\, implications\, and assumptions. \nSelected Texts: \n• St. Thomas\, Treatise on Law (Hackett\, 2000)\n• The Roots of Political Philosophy: Ten Forgotten Socratic Dialogues\, ed. Thomas L. Pangle (Ithaca\, NY: Cornell University\, 1987)\n• H.L.A. Hart\, The Concept of Law (Oxford University Press: any edition) \nDo not miss the application deadline\, January 5th! You may apply online or download an application and send it with supporting documents to the Office of Admissions. \nPontifical John Paul II Institute\nMcGivney Hall\n620 Michigan Ave. NE\nWashington\, D.C. 20064 \nIf you have questions\, please contact information@johnpaulii.edu.

SUMMARY:The Continuing Importance of John Paul II's Thought
DESCRIPTION:Fr. Jarosław Kupczak\, O.P.\, will present a lecture on “The Continuing Importance of John Paul II’s Thought” on Thursday\, Feb. 22\, at 4:00 p.m.\, in Keane Auditorium\, McGivney Hall. \nConsidering only the numbers\, the pontificate of John Paul II stands as an unprecedented and monumental event in history of the Catholic Church: the second-longest pontificate in history\, with unparalleled numbers of documents published\, countries and continents visited\, and saints recognized\, and multitudes of people who personally met the pope. Even more significantly\, John Paul II’s pontificate provides the hermeneutic for the most important event in the Catholic Church of the past hundred years: the Second Vatican Council\, which provided the Catholic response to the crisis of late modernity. Fr. Kupczak will reflect on the most important achievements of John Paul II as an authentic interpreter of Vatican II: the evangelical and apostolic understanding of the office of the Roman Pontiff\, the evangelization of culture\, the defense of moral and religious truths under assault of post-truth ideologies\, the invitation to dialogue in the divided and violence ridden world\, and the Christocentric anthropology as the point of reference for cultural decline of the post-modern culture. \nFr. Kupczak\, who is Professor of Theological Anthropology and Director of the Center for Research on the Thought of John Paul II at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow\, is currently teaching at the John Paul II Institute as the inaugural recipient of the David L. Schindler Fellowship for Distinguished Scholars. \nThe lecture will be followed by a reception.

SUMMARY:2024 Summer Fellowship: "Gender\, Technology\, and Culture"
DESCRIPTION:How do we find ourselves unable to affirm a fundamental element of human experience—the reality and givenness of our being differentiated as male and female\, husbands and wives\, mothers and fathers\, sons and daughters\, brothers and sisters? It is a reality the child first learns at his or her mother’s breast. Why then has it been so widely nullified and its expression increasingly sanctioned? What caused this strange development? The answers lie deep in the theological and philosophical assumptions of modernity. \n \nThe 2024 John Paul II Institute’s annual Summer Fellowship “Gender\, Technology\, and Culture” will engage deeply with the theological and philosophical questions raised by the emergence and seeming success of gender ideology. We will focus on the relationship between the current gender movement\, modernity’s dominant scientific and technological understanding of reality\, and the rejection of cultural form. \nThe Fellowship will include lectures\, ample time for discussion\, cultural events around Washington D.C.\, and social time among students and with faculty. \nThe Fellowship will take place May 20-24\, at the John Paul II Institute\, on the campus of The Catholic University of America. College juniors\, seniors\, and recent graduates in all majors are welcome to apply. \nApplication \nProspective Summer Fellows should complete the application form by March 1. (Deadline extended until March 15. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and as places remain available until March 15.) Acceptance notifications will be sent by March 15 (for applications received by March 1.) \nCosts \nAll Summer Fellows will receive a scholarship that covers the cost of housing in the dorms of The Catholic University of America\, meals\, and tuition. Participants will be responsible for their own travel to Washington\, DC\, public transportation expenses\, and a $200 registration fee. \nQuestions may be directed to Elena Martin at emartin@johnpaulii.edu or 202-526-3799. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nI enjoyed all of the activities. I especially enjoyed the time at the National Gallery of Art because I was able to view the art through the anthropological lens that we were discussing this week. There was a great sense of community\, and we had awesome discussions through the week. (Emily Thomas\, 2023 Fellow). \nThe most valuable part of this experience for me was the deep dialogue into the issues of our culture\, to know how to respond. Often\, we miss the anthropological\, metaphysical\, theological assumptions of people around us and I think we cannot have adequate discussion without recognizing these things. This definitely gave me the backdrop to do that more. (Joseph Hempfling\, 2023 Fellow).

SUMMARY:Summer Course: "Twentieth-Century Catholic Literature"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a course on “Twentieth-Century Catholic Literature\,” as part of the John Paul II Institute’s Continuing Education Program. \nThe class will center on three renowned Catholic writers from the first half of the twentieth century: Charles Péguy\, Georges Bernanos\, and Evelyn Waugh. \nThe focus will be\, more particularly\, on Péguy’s famous trilogy of Mysteries\, Bernanos’ The Diary of a Country Priest\, and Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. Our goal will\, in the first place\, be to gain a deeper understanding of these texts\, but we will also consider the men who wrote these masterpieces\, men who were famously powerful personalities. In doing so\, we will gain a familiarity with the vital concerns that shaped their work and find a time perhaps not so unlike our own. Throughout\, the hope is to encounter authors who offer a profound vision of life lived in and under Christ in the modern world. \nNote: Because of the amount of material covered in the course\, participants in the class should have done a majority of the reading for the course before it begins. \nThe course meets Monday through Friday\, July 22-26\, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. Class will be taught in person and offered online simultaneously. \nIn addition to this course\, the Institute will offer a course on “Called to Love: Theology of the Body”. Classes will take place Monday through Friday\, July 15-19\, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. \nEach course fee is $150. To register\, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment\, please click here. \nRegistration for the course closes Friday\, July 19. \nNumerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington accept this course toward VCEA licensure or CEU requirements for teachers. \nFor more information\, email: information@johnpaulii.edu
