Wade\, and thus to do away with federal protection of abortion as a fundamental right\, came as a shock to many. The decision\, Dobbs v. Jackson\, has provoked responses from joy and relief to outrage and even violence. But it is also becoming clear that many Americans are unaware of exactly what Roe\, along with the important 1992 decision Planned Parenthood v. Casey\, actually held\, and thus are uncertain about what the consequences of Dobbs for abortion law in the United States will be. \nOn August 27\, 2022\, the John Paul II Institute is hosting a panel discussion of the Dobbs decision to help Catholics to “read the signs of the times and interpret them in the light of the Gospel” (Gaudium et spes\, 3-4). Featured scholars will shed light on the significance of this landmark decision for American law and culture\, in view of the Church’s understanding of the dignity of every human person and the sanctity of human life. This has become evident in the past few years through the “education wars” that are an ever-present feature of our democracy. Some questions concerning this course will be: What is the role of the family in the educating children to be members of society? What does Christianity reveal about the nature of the family and its responsibility for the education of children and its responsibility to the state? What is the importance of the Church’s teaching that the family is the ecclesia domestica? By examining texts from the tradition (Plato\, Aristotle\, Augustine and Aquinas)\, contemporary political thought\, as well as the Papal and Conciliar teachings of the 19th and 20th century\, the course will address those issues. \nClass will be taught in person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006\, and offered online simultaneously. \nThe class fee is $150. But we have a sacrosanct word to speak to you and it is this: Only God is great. God alone is the beginning and the end. God alone is the source of your authority and the foundation of your laws. . . . It is God\, the living and true God\, who is the Father of men and women. And it is Christ\, His eternal Son\, who came to make this known to us and to teach us that we are all brothers and sisters. He it is who is the great artisan of order and peace on earth. . . . In your earthly and temporal city\, God constructs mysteriously His spiritual and eternal city\, His Church. In doing so\, it has reduced the Church’s mission to that of one interest group\, whose private form of rationality is essentially irrelevant to public discourse\, or worse\, is an obstruction to material and political progress. \nYet\, by reason and by faith the Church acknowledges the primacy of God as “the beginning and end of all things” (Vatican I\, Dei Filius). How does the primacy of God and the corollary doctrine of the common good shed light on the nature and end of political authority? What is the ground of religious freedom? Culminating three years of “grassroots revival of devotion and belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist\,” a national Eucharistic Congress will take place in 2024—the first of its kind in nearly 50 years. The Bishops “believe that God wants to see a movement of Catholics across the United States\, healed\, converted\, formed\, and unified by an encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist—and sent out in mission ‘for the life of the world.’” \nRecent years have witnessed a loss of the sense of God’s holiness and how the faithful enter into the mystery of God’s holiness in the Eucharist. RSVP here to reserve a free ticket. \nThe depiction of the human figure is central to the history of art. But how do artists depict the inner aspects of the person—emotions\, spirit\, suffering? In this lecture we will look at how artists use expressive means such as distortion\, extension\, and the dematerialization of the body to convey inner life. We will look in detail at several works by El Greco\, studying the poses\, gestures\, and visual qualities of particular figures. Jumping back in time\, we’ll look at El Greco’s roots in medieval and Byzantine figural art. Our theme for this summer’s program is “Gender\, Technology\, and Culture.” \nG.K. Chesterton once predicted that the proposition “leaves are green in summer” will one day become a matter of religious conviction over which swords will be drawn. His prophetic remark foreshadows the present crisis: a basic element of human experience—our being differentiated as male and female\, husbands and wives\, mothers and fathers\, sons and daughters\, brothers and sisters—has been widely nullified and its expression increasingly sanctioned. What caused this strange development? \nThe ideology of gender draws on a wider and older narrative of progressive liberation\, both from traditional political structures and from the givenness of our “material” condition. Its rhetorical face likens the movement to recent civil rights battles over race or sex. But\, unlike the question of race\, and more radically than that of sex\, it attempts to detach the personal subject from a mechanistically conceived and objectified body\, ostensibly transmutable according to subjective preferences. The mantle of political and social liberation has given way to an explicit assault on the givenness of natural and cultural form. As such\, the gender movement is perhaps the starkest unmasking to date of modern rationality’s deeper implications. \nOur 2023 Summer Fellowship will focus on the relationship between the current gender movement\, modernity’s dominant scientific and technological understanding of reality\, and the rejection of cultural form. The Fellowship will include not only lectures and seminars but also cultural events. \nApplication\nProspective Summer Fellows should complete the application form by April 7.  Acceptance notifications will be sent by April 21. \nPlease note: Applications are still being accepted; however\, new applicants may be waitlisted\, as the acceptance process is already underway (4/19/23). \nCosts\nAll Summer Fellows will receive a scholarship that covers the cost of housing in the dorms of The Catholic University of America\, meals\, and tuition. We will also delve into supplementary texts that will aid us in understanding human love in its fullness.
