SUMMARY:Dobbs v. Jackson and the Culture of Life
DESCRIPTION:Location: Saint John Paul II National Shrine (3900 Harewood Road\, NE) \nThe Supreme Court’s decision this summer to overturn Roe v. Wade\, and thus to do away with federal protection of abortion as a fundamental right\, came as a shock to many. The decision\, Dobbs v. Jackson\, has provoked responses from joy and relief to outrage and even violence. But it is also becoming clear that many Americans are unaware of exactly what Roe\, along with the important 1992 decision Planned Parenthood v. Casey\, actually held\, and thus are uncertain about what the consequences of Dobbs for abortion law in the United States will be. \nOn August 27\, 2022\, the John Paul II Institute is hosting a panel discussion of the Dobbs decision to help Catholics to “read the signs of the times and interpret them in the light of the Gospel” (Gaudium et spes\, 3-4). Featured scholars will shed light on the significance of this landmark decision for American law and culture\, in view of the Church’s understanding of the dignity of every human person and the sanctity of human life. Talks will present and interpret the history of abortion jurisprudence in the United States and will also look ahead to new opportunities and challenges for the pro-life movement. \nSpeakers will include: \n\nDavid S. Crawford\, Dean and Associate Professor of Moral Theology and Family Law\, Pontifical John Paul II Institute\nElizabeth Kirk\, Director of the Center for Law & the Human Person\, Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America\nJeanne Mancini\, President\, March for Life Education and Defense Fund\nModerator: Jeanne Heffernan Schindler\, Senior Fellow\, Pontifical John Paul II Institute\n\n  \nTo register\, please complete the form below. \n\n\n \n \n Dobbs v. SUMMARY:Continuing Education Course: Education\, Politics\, and the Family
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2022 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Education\, Politics\, and the Person”.  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 7 to December 7\, 2022. \nThe relationship of the family to political society is unquestionably one of the most important questions in both secular political thought and Catholic social teaching. This has become evident in the past few years through the “education wars” that are an ever-present feature of our democracy. Some questions concerning this course will be: What is the role of the family in the educating children to be members of society? What does Christianity reveal about the nature of the family and its responsibility for the education of children and its responsibility to the state? What is the importance of the Church’s teaching that the family is the ecclesia domestica? By examining texts from the tradition (Plato\, Aristotle\, Augustine and Aquinas)\, contemporary political thought\, as well as the Papal and Conciliar teachings of the 19th and 20th century\, the course will address those issues. \nClass will be taught in person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006\, and offered online simultaneously. \nThe class fee is $150. To register\, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment\, please click here. \nThis course can be taken toward renewal requirements for VCEA licensure. Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington accept the course for CEU credits. \nIf you have questions please contact information@johnpaulii.edu. \n‘ \n

Jacques Servais\, S.J. \n \nSeveral John Paul II Institute graduates will also present at the conference: \n\nLisa Lickona (M.T.S. ’93\, S.T.L. ’98): “Love Acknowledged: The Ressourcement of Spirituality Through a Friendship with the Saints”\nMark Banga (M.T.S. ’18\, current Ph.D. Candidate): “Joseph Ratzinger’s Communio Liturgical Theology: Illuminating the Issue of Communion for the Divorced and Remarried”\nDaniel Drain (M.T.S. ’16\, current Ph.D. Candidate): “For What May We Hope? Hans Urs von Balthasar and the Church’s Ecclesial Task”\nMatthew Kuhner (M.T.S. ’13): “Papal Resignation as Theological Event? On Benedict XVI\, the Petrine Ministry\, and the Nature of Ecclesial Office”\nErik van Versendaal (Ph.D. ’19): “Formed in and for Communion: Philosophy and the Salvation of the World”\n\n  \nVirtual registration is available here. \n  \nBelow is the conference description from St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry: \n\n\n“Only by assuming a non-polemic role of tranquility in the center will it be possible to assume genuine responsibility for the whole.”\n– The Mission of Communio \n\n\n\n\nIn the mission statement for Communio: International Catholic Review\, Hans Urs von Balthasar set forth a vision that he and the other founders hoped would inform a print journal and give shape to a theological movement born from the heart of the Church. For Balthasar\, Communio set out to “fight at all costs against the deadly polarization brought on by the fervor displayed by traditionalists and modernists alike” and “to perceive of the Church as a central communion\, a community that originated from communion with Christ\, who presented himself as a gift to the Church; as a communion that will enable us to share our hearts\, thoughts\, and blessings.” \nGiven the persistent relevance of this mission\, the upcoming anniversary seems an appropriate moment to consider the theological and cultural engagement of a journal that is now realized in 14 language-editions around the world. \nThe purpose of the conference is three-fold: \n\nTo understand and appreciate the contribution of Communio to the Church over the past fifty years\nTo continue and further the trajectories of theological and cultural engagement present in the pages of Communio\nTo ponder the same questions posed by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger in 1992 after Communio’s first twenty years: “Have we been courageous enough? … Have we really spoken the Word of faith intelligibly and reached the hearts of a hungering world?”

SUMMARY:What’s New about the New Totalitarianism?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Hanby\, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy of Science\, will present at Touchstone Magazine’s 2022 fall conference titled “Something Wicked This Way Comes: Diabolical Fantasies & the Mystery of the Real.” \nDr. Hanby’s talk entitled “What’s New about the New Totalitarianism?” will be on Thursday\, October 13\, 2022 at 7:50 p.m. (Central Time).  The conference will take place at Trinity International University in Deerfield\, IL. \nOther featured speakers include Hans Boersma\, Allan Carlson\, Rod Dreher\, Joshua Mitchell\, Carl Trueman\, and R.V. Young. \nConference Description: \nA diabolical fantasy is a false image that presents itself as something real. “Transgender woman” and “gay marriage” are two obvious examples of diabolical fantasies that mean to replace the reality of sex and marriage in God’s created order. Christians must disentangle ourselves from the unrealities of our age because “by the pricking of my thumbs\, something wicked this way comes.” \nThe Touchstone conference brings together Protestant\, Roman Catholic\, and Eastern Orthodox Christians\, a tradition-bound gathering of what C. S. Lewis called “Mere Christianity.” \n  \nVideo footage from Dr. Hanby’s presentation has been made available on the Touchstone website here.

SUMMARY:"The Transcendentals: Truth"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. D. C. Schindler\, Professor of Metaphysics and Anthropology\, will lead a seminar at The Kateri Institute for Catholic Studies in Ann Arbor\, Michigan.  His seminar is part of the Kateri Institute’s series “The Life of the Mind” with the transcendentals as this semester’s theme. \nEvent Description: \nThe Kateri Institute for Catholic Studies offers a home for faculty\, staff\, and students at the University of Michigan to integrate their studies with the Catholic intellectual tradition. \nThe Life of the Mind is about asking the “big questions” of existence. Why is the natural world so beautiful? Why does it have an intelligible order? Why is there a world at all? The series is also concerned with “meaning of life” questions that can be postponed (especially in our endlessly distracting society) but never completely eradicated. Why are we here? Why must we die? How should we live? In short\, the Life of the Mind series is devoted to contemplation of some of the most important questions ever asked. \nTruth. Beauty. Goodness. Throughout the centuries\, thinkers have called these cosmic values transcendentals because they were believed to exist universally beyond space\, time\, matter\, and history\, and because all human beings longed to know them. In the classical world\, the transcendentals were understood to harmonize the soul with a well-ordered universe\, a prerequisite to human flourishing. Medieval thinkers associated the transcendentals with the triune God of Christianity and believed that human beings\, as imago Dei\, possessed an innate ability to know truth\, love beauty\, and desire goodness. How do these values look to us now? How might they speak to our intellectual\, aesthetic\, and ethical lives as students\, teachers\, and citizens of the world? This series will examine the transcendentals as a category of thought that is just as important now as it ever was. Indeed\, they make life worth living. \n  \nFor more details\, visit The Kateri Institute for Catholic Studies website.

SUMMARY:The Common Good and the Political Order: On the Church's Responsibility for the World
DESCRIPTION:Conference Description\nDuring the concluding ceremonies of the Second Vatican Council\, Cardinal Lienart\, speaking on behalf of Pope Paul VI and the Council fathers\, delivered the following message “to all those who hold temporal power”: \nWe do honor to your authority and your sovereignty\, we respect your office\, we recognize your just laws . . . . But we have a sacrosanct word to speak to you and it is this: Only God is great. God alone is the beginning and the end. God alone is the source of your authority and the foundation of your laws. . . . It is God\, the living and true God\, who is the Father of men and women. And it is Christ\, His eternal Son\, who came to make this known to us and to teach us that we are all brothers and sisters. He it is who is the great artisan of order and peace on earth. . . . In your earthly and temporal city\, God constructs mysteriously His spiritual and eternal city\, His Church. And what does this Church ask of you after close to two thousand years of experiences of all kinds in her relations with you today? She tells you in one of the major documents of this Council. She asks of you only freedom\, the freedom to believe and preach her faith\, the freedom to love her God and serve Him\, the freedom to bring to mankind her message of life. \nAnd yet\, this plea for religious freedom seems to stand in some tension with the Church’s perennial commitment to the common good. As has become more apparent since the Counsel\, the liberalism of Western democracies\, such as the U.S.\, has increasingly neglected the idea of common good in favor of the mere mediation of individual and group interests and rights. In doing so\, it has reduced the Church’s mission to that of one interest group\, whose private form of rationality is essentially irrelevant to public discourse\, or worse\, is an obstruction to material and political progress. \nYet\, by reason and by faith the Church acknowledges the primacy of God as “the beginning and end of all things” (Vatican I\, Dei Filius). How does the primacy of God and the corollary doctrine of the common good shed light on the nature and end of political authority? What is the ground of religious freedom? What is the nature of the Church’s responsibility for the temporal order? \nWhile there is a growing consensus among Catholics that our liberal political order is in crisis\, there remain deep disagreements about the nature and end of political authority and the relationship between the Church and state. The aim of this conference is to consider the relationship between the Church and political order in light of the idea of the common good as developed within the Catholic tradition. \nSchedule\nAll conference sessions will take place in Keane Auditorium\, McGivney Hall\, on the campus of The Catholic University of America. \n\n\n\nFriday\, November 4\n\n\n6:30 p.m.\nWelcome and Opening Remarks \n\nRev. SUMMARY:Putting Predestination in Its Place: An Answer to the Question “Why the World?”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Margaret McCarthy\, Associate Professor of Theological Anthropology\, will present at the de Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture Fall Conference at the University of Notre Dame on Friday\, November 11\, 2022.  The conference theme is “‘And It Was Very Good’: On Creation.” \n  \nThe title of her presentation is “Putting Predestination in Its Place: An Answer to the Question ‘Why the World?’.” \n \n  \nBelow is an abstract of Dr. McCarthy’s presentation. \nThe doctrine of predestination is well-known among theologians (not the laity). It concerns a limited number of souls led infallibly to salvation. Some say we must hold together principles which “appear” to be irreconcilable and wait until the eschaton for the resolution. But the mystery of predestination has been revealed. Predestination is the “mystery” establishing a good creation\, and a good (not inevitable) destiny for all men. \nFor full details\, visit the conference website.

SUMMARY:“The Eucharist as Form: Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Theology of the Laity”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nicholas J. Healy\, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Culture\, will present at a conference at Ave Maria University titled “The Holiness of God and The Mystery of the Eucharist” presented by The Aquinas Center and St. Paul Center. \n  \nDr. Healy’s presentation is titled “The Eucharist as Form: Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Theology of the Laity.” \n \nAbout the Conference: \nFollowing the promulgation of their 2021 document\, The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church\, the Bishops of the United States have called for a national Eucharistic revival. Culminating three years of “grassroots revival of devotion and belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist\,” a national Eucharistic Congress will take place in 2024—the first of its kind in nearly 50 years. The Bishops “believe that God wants to see a movement of Catholics across the United States\, healed\, converted\, formed\, and unified by an encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist—and sent out in mission ‘for the life of the world.’” \nRecent years have witnessed a loss of the sense of God’s holiness and how the faithful enter into the mystery of God’s holiness in the Eucharist. When Moses encountered God in the burning bush\, he was told to remove his shoes for “the place where he was standing was holy ground.” When Isaiah described his vision of God\, he began with “holy\, holy\, holy.” John in Revelation describes Jesus as “the holy one\, the true one” and the new heavens and the new earth simply as “the holy city.” Standing at the heart of the mysteries of creation and redemption\, God’s holiness grounds the new covenant relationship established in Jesus Christ’s gift of himself in the Eucharist. \nThis conference invites theologians to draw upon the entire theological patrimony of the Catholic Church to rediscover and retrieve the revelation of God’s holiness and the mystery of the Eucharist. \nFull conference details available here.

SUMMARY:Reflections on the Origins of Communio and the Contribution of Several Ressourcement Theologians: In Memory of David L. Schindler
DESCRIPTION:The John Paul II Institute will host a conversation with Fr. Joseph Fessio\, S.J. on Monday\, March 27\, at 4 p.m. in Keane Auditorium: “Reflections on the Origins of Communio and the Contribution of Several Ressourcement Theologians: In Memory of David L. Schindler.” \nFr. Fessio is in a unique position to reflect on the post-conciliar currents in Catholic theology. He studied under theological giants Joseph Ratzinger\, Henri de Lubac\, and Hans Urs von Balthasar\, who together founded Communio: International Catholic Review in 1972\, and was instrumental in the selection of David L. Schindler as editor of the English-language edition of the journal\, which Dr. Schindler led for more than 40 years. As founder and editor of Ignatius Press\, Fr. Fessio has spent 45 years bringing the profound works of his former teachers (and many others) to an English-speaking audience. \nThe event is in memory of David L. Schindler (1943-2022)\, who was a seminary classmate of Fr. Fessio’s in the early ’60s and a former Dean of the Institute. Fr. Fessio will share personal and theological reflections on the lives and work of Ratzinger\, de Lubac\, and Balthasar\, and on the significance of the Communio school for Catholic theology. \nWe hope you will join us for this special event.

SUMMARY:The Human Figure in Art
DESCRIPTION:Humanum Review\, the online journal of the John Paul II Institute\, invites you to a lecture on “The Human Figure in Art” by art historian Dr. Sarah Bond. \nThe event will be held on Friday\, April 14\, at 6:30 p.m. at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine (3900 Harewood Road Northeast Washington\, DC 20017) with a cocktail reception to follow. \nAdmission is free. RSVP here to reserve a free ticket. \nThe depiction of the human figure is central to the history of art. But how do artists depict the inner aspects of the person—emotions\, spirit\, suffering? In this lecture we will look at how artists use expressive means such as distortion\, extension\, and the dematerialization of the body to convey inner life. We will look in detail at several works by El Greco\, studying the poses\, gestures\, and visual qualities of particular figures. Jumping back in time\, we’ll look at El Greco’s roots in medieval and Byzantine figural art. Finally\, we’ll turn to two modern masters of the expressive human figure\, Rodin and Picasso\, both of whom were influenced by El Greco and both of whom depicted “spiritualized” figures in a secular context. \nSarah Bond is an art historian and independent scholar with a Ph.D. in Medieval Art from Harvard University.  You may read her recent Humanum article on Georgia O’Keeffe’s Affection for Things. \n \n
