SUMMARY:Bioethics Summer Intensive Course: ONLINE
DESCRIPTION:July 20\, 2020 — July 24\, 2020 \nThis week-long course will serve as an immersion into bioethical thinking. We will look at the historical origins of bioethical issues in America\, as well as the fundamental nature of the types of questions asked in bioethics\, namely\, having to do with human life\, health\, birth\, and death. Our main focus will be on applying the thought of St. John Paul II concerning the human person as a lens through which to view bioethical questions: assisted reproduction\, end-of-life decision-making\, allocation of scarce resources in epidemics\, etc. Through readings\, morning lectures\, and afternoon discussions/short reflections\, the course aims at not only providing a historical and theoretical background\, but also at equipping students to think about issues in bioethics through the lens of St. John Paul II and the Church. \nThe course meets Monday through Friday\, July 20-24\, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. \nRegistration \nRegistration for the course is now closed. \nFor more information\, email: information@johnpaulii.edu.

SUMMARY:Our God’s Nearness: On the Christian Sacraments
DESCRIPTION:September 2\, 2020 — December 2\, 2020 (6:30pm – 8:30pm) \nRediscover the depth and richness of the sacramental life. In this course we will explore general issues relating to sacramental theology including how grace perfects nature\, and the cosmic and historic dimensions of liturgy. In this way we will begin to see how worship is not merely an external obligation\, but is fulfilling and freeing to the human person. In addition\, we will delve more deeply into particular questions relating to each of the seven Sacraments. To help us in this task\, we’ll read and think along with many great saints including: Irenaeus\, Bonaventure\, Thomas Aquinas\, John Henry Newman\, and John Paul II. In a time where distance is the new normal\, come reflect with us on the nearness of our God and the way he desires to communicate himself to you. \nThis course will be taught in-person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006 according to the procedures and policies described in the Institute’s COVID-19 Campus Reopening Plan. Because of the Social Distance Policy\, the number of students who can take this course in-person will be limited. However\, the course will also be offered on-line simultaneously. In this way\, students who cannot come to campus will be able to follow the class and obtain credit. The final class meeting on December 2 will be held online. \nFor more information\, email: information@johnpaulii.edu. \nThe class fee is $150. To register\, please submit the application form to information@johnpaulii.edu. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. To submit a credit card payment\, please click here. \nThis course can be taken toward renewal requirements for VCEA licensure. Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington accept the course for CEU credits.

SUMMARY:“Catholic Politics and the Analogy of Authority”
DESCRIPTION:March 20\, 2021\nLeonardo’s Coffeehouse\, Steubenville\, Ohio \nDr. D.C. Schindler will present a lecture on “Catholic Politics and the Analogy of Authority” on Saturday\, March 20th at 9:30am at a conference hosted by New Polity. \n  \nFrom the New Polity website: \n\nLiberal societies confuse man’s relationship with God and neighbor; they establish civic peace through fear instead of justice; they follow a “city plan” of violence. But the Christian city ought to be built according to a blueprint of love.\nThe conference\, titled “Founding the Christian Society\,” will articulate the theological\, metaphysical\, and political principles on which to build societies apart from the violent foundations of liberalism and upon the sure rock of the Gospel. To this end\, we are organizing our conference around the state and the economy—asking what they would be like as reformed by Christianity.\n\n  \nClick here to register for in-person attendance or to register for digital access.

SUMMARY:Sexual Ethics: Online Intensive Course
DESCRIPTION:July 12\, 2021 — July 16\, 2021 \nThis one-week intensive course will study St. John Paul II/Karol Wojtyła’s teachings on Catholic sexual ethics\, by employing a novel approach: focusing on a positive account of the nature of the human person and conjugal/marital love structured as total\, reciprocal gift of self. For the Pope\, a proper understanding of the objective nature of conjugal love – considered in relation to marriage as a Christian state of life – illuminates the essence of the virtue of chastity. Drawing upon the Pope’s encyclical Veritatis Splendor\, students will gain a brief introduction to the foundational principles of Catholic moral theology: truth\, freedom\, conscience\, virtue\, law\, and the moral act. Furthermore\, special attention will be devoted to John Paul II’s distinct contributions such as the “personalistic norm” (from Love & Responsibility) and “the spousal meaning of the body” (from Theology of the Body). The primary goal is to help students think deeply these issues and be able to articulate the unifying thread: to act morally in the sexual sphere is simply to act with “responsibility” for the inviolable dignity of the human person and for the truth of love\, a truth that does not enslave but liberates us. \nThe course meets Monday through Friday\, July 12-16\, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. \nThe class fee is $150. Registration for this course has closed. \nRegistration for the course closes Thursday\, July 8. \nFor more information\, email: information@johnpaulii.edu

SUMMARY:Continuing Education Course: Called to Love
DESCRIPTION:The Spring 2022 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “Called to Love.”  It will be held on Wednesday evenings from January 19 to April 27\, 2022. \nThis course studies John Paul II’s Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body—his “Wednesday catecheses”—through a reading of the text and a discussion of his scriptural\, theological\, and philosophical methodology. It shows how the dual unity of man and woman and their interpersonal communion\, even in the body\, image divine trinitarian life. In order to provide context and deeper insight into the Wednesday catecheses\, the course will draw also on other works by John Paul II\, such as Love and Responsibility\, Redemptor Hominis\, and Familiaris Consortio. \nClass will be taught in person and offered online simultaneously. \nThe class fee is $150. To register\, please complete the online registration form. Payment can be submitted via check\, cash\, or credit card. \nThis course can be taken toward renewal requirements for VCEA licensure. Numerous high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington accept the course for CEU credits. \nIf you have questions please contact information@johnpaulii.edu.

SUMMARY:“God and the City: On Religion as a Res Publica” Lecture
DESCRIPTION:January 28\, 2022 (7:30 p.m. CST)\nUniversity of Dallas \nDr. D. C. Schindler will present the Aquinas Lecture\, “God and the City: On Religion as a Res Publica” at the University of Dallas on January 28\, 2022\, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CST)\, 8:30 p.m. (EST).  The university’s philosophy department is hosting the event in SB Hall’s multi-purpose room. \nBefore his presentation\, Dr. Schindler will host an informative session for students interested in the mission of the John Paul II Institute from 3-4:00 p.m. (CST) in the Braniff Building\, Room 301. \n \nBelow is a brief history of the University of Dallas Aquinas Lecture: \nSince 1982\, the Philosophy Department has hosted an annual Aquinas Lecture. In the spirit of St. Thomas Aquinas himself\, the goal of the lecture series is to develop contemporary Catholic thought in close dialogue with the tradition—above all\, of course\, with Aquinas’s own work. The speakers invited have covered a broad spectrum of Thomism\, some attempting to defend traditional teachings against contemporary challenges\, others endeavoring to develop Thomism in more of a give and take with current ideas. One important feature of the Aquinas Lecture has to do with the events surrounding it: the Aquinas Lecturer is usually invited to stay in Irving for a few days\, teach a seminar on a text of his or her choice\, share meals with faculty\, and speak informally with students. This creates the opportunity for the community to engage in a genuine exchange\, rather than just listening to an individual lecture. The Aquinas Lecture and most of the events associated with it are open to the general public. \nSee video footage from this event:

SUMMARY:“Thomism and Contemporary Ideologies”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Hanby will be a plenary speaker the 45th annual meeting of the American Maritain Association with a presentation titled\, “The Interior Schism: On the Unresolved Question of the Church in the Modern World.” The AMA conference topic is “Thomism and Contemporary Ideologies.” \nThe conference will be held from Thursday\, April 7 to Saturday\, April 9\, 2022\, at DeSales University in Center Valley\, PA. \n \nThe following alumni are also presenting during the conference’s concurrent sessions. \n\nDr. William R. Hamant (Ph.D. ’12): “The Imagination and the Imago Dei”\nMr. Daniel A. Drain (M.T.S. ’16\, current Ph.D. candidate): “Anima Technica Vacua: Modern Man in Jacques Maritain\, Robert Spaemann\, and Ferdinand Ulrich”\n\nBelow is the American Maritain Association’s Description of the Conference Topic: \nJacques Maritain is often considered a critic of modernity. We would do better\, however\, to see his work as engaging the disorders of modern philosophy and its drift into ideology. He begins his seminal The Degrees of Knowledge—which celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2022—by noting that the failure of modern philosophies lie in their neglect of being. Lacking a foundation in reality\, the moderns too often presume reality to be obedient to the mind and the will of man. This pervasive error leads them to a Babel of divergent worldviews. In doing so\, it frustrates the human drive for truth. As Maritain affirms\, “What we need is not truths that serve us but a truth we may serve.” In advancing the commission of Aeterni Patris\, he argues that only by centering ourselves in the realism of St. Thomas can we find a sure ground for both the person and society. \nMany of the distortions that Maritain fought—nominalism\, idealism\, collectivism—are still with us. Yet these have been joined by new and unexpected ideologies arising from the ever more adamant refusals to engage being. We cannot ignore the pressing practical problems associated with these ideologies.

SUMMARY:“The Form of Christian Thought: A Balthasarian Proposal”
DESCRIPTION:April 30\, 2022 (9:00am – 11:00am)\nSt. Patrick’s Pontifical University\, Maynooth\, Ireland \nOn April 30\, 2022\, Dr. D.C. Schindler will present at an international conference entitled\, “The Future of Christian Thinking” at St. Patrick’s Pontifical University in Maynooth\, Ireland. \nDr. Schindler’s presentation is entitled “The Form of Christian Thought: A Balthasarian Proposal.” \nOther featured speakers include Rowan Williams\, David Bentley Hart\, Eleonore Stump\, Robert George\, John Milbank\, Cyril O’Regan\, William Desmond\, Fr. Thomas Joseph White\, and Francesca Aran Murphy. \nDescription of the conference theme:\nToday\, perhaps more than ever before\, Christian thought faces unprecedented challenges; ranging from a denial of metaphysics\, to previously unforeseen ethico-moral questions arising from contemporary science and ever-advancing technologies\, to a full-blown economizing of the political\, to name just some of the most obvious. Couple this with the fact that amongst Christian thinkers there is no real consensus on the meaning\, definition and end of Christian thinking and the future of Christian thinking looks hazy\, unclear and tenuous. \nThe theme of this conference seeks to think from out of these unprecedented challenges while\, simultaneously\, straining to look into a nebulous and unforeseen future. In order to do this\, a vast array of many of the foremost thinkers engaged with Christian thought and beyond have been invited to speak on these issues. These thinkers are representative of many different schools\, approaches and styles of Christian thought\, across confessional divides. The vast array of thinkers invited is itself a testimony of the polyphonic vitality of Christian thought today and\, together\, the ever-pressing question of the future of Christian thinking will be pondered from within an intellectually polyphonic and ecumenical conversation and perspective.
