SUMMARY:Bioethics: The Body and Technology (Continuing Education Course)
DESCRIPTION:September 4\, 2019 — December 4\, 2019 \nThis course will address questions at the intersection of medical technology and the human being\, who is not only an animal (with a biological nature)\, but a person—bearing metaphysical\, interpersonal\, and spiritual dimensions. In particular\, the issue of “brain death” and the philosophical questions it raises about the meaning of death\, the body\, organ donation\, and what it is to be alive will be focused on. This course will examine the historical emergence of bioethics and brain death\, assessing the role and meaning of modern technology for ethics and medicine through the thought of Hans Jonas. The second half of the course will examine the meaning of embodiment through both a philosophy and theology of the human body\, in the thought of St. John Paul II and others. Questions such as what does the fact of our conception and birth\, our existing as male and female\, our mortality\, and suffering\, reveal about the meaning of existence as such\, will be explored. DESCRIPTION:October 11\, 2019 (7:30pm – 9:00pm)\nAll Saints Anglican Church: 3889 Ivy Road\, Charlottesville\, VA 22903 \n“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore\, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galations 5:1 \nThe Fall 2019 Areopagus Lecture at All Saints Anglican Church will feature Dr. D.C. Schindler on the Christian understanding of religious liberty. \n \nThe Areopagus Lectures are sponsored by MARS HILL AUDIO to promote a deeper understanding of the theological resources needed to live faithfully amid the challenges of a post-Christian society. \nReligious liberty is one of the founding principles of the American political order\, and it also lies at the center of Christian existence. But is the meaning of liberty the same in the two contexts? This lecture will argue that not only are these two senses of liberty different\, but that they in fact sit uneasily together. In order to see why there is a tension between them\, Professor Schindler will spend some time filling out the content of the distinctively Christian notion of freedom\, which arises out of the confluence of three traditions: that of the Jews\, the Greeks\, and the Romans. Professor Schindler will then compare this to the particular notion of freedom embedded in the right to religious liberty as it is generally conceived today. Given the difference between these two approaches\, attempts to protect Christian existence in the contemporary world through appeals to religious liberty threaten to do more harm than good. SUMMARY:Our God’s Nearness: On the Christian Sacraments
DESCRIPTION:September 2\, 2020 — December 2\, 2020 (6:30pm – 8:30pm) \nRediscover the depth and richness of the sacramental life. In this course we will explore general issues relating to sacramental theology including how grace perfects nature\, and the cosmic and historic dimensions of liturgy. In this way we will begin to see how worship is not merely an external obligation\, but is fulfilling and freeing to the human person. In addition\, we will delve more deeply into particular questions relating to each of the seven Sacraments. To help us in this task\, we’ll read and think along with many great saints including: Irenaeus\, Bonaventure\, Thomas Aquinas\, John Henry Newman\, and John Paul II. In a time where distance is the new normal\, come reflect with us on the nearness of our God and the way he desires to communicate himself to you. \nThis course will be taught in-person in McGivney Hall on Catholic University of America’s campus in Room 006 according to the procedures and policies described in the Institute’s COVID-19 Campus Reopening Plan. Because of the Social Distance Policy\, the number of students who can take this course in-person will be limited. However\, the course will also be offered on-line simultaneously. In this way\, students who cannot come to campus will be able to follow the class and obtain credit. It shows how the dual unity of man and woman and their interpersonal communion\, even in the body\, image divine trinitarian life. Special emphasis will be made on the foundations of the Theology of the Body in the Christian tradition. The course will draw also on other works by John Paul II that deal with marriage and the family\, such as The Jeweler’s Shop\, Love and Responsibility\, and Roman Triptych. \nUPDATE: *This course will be taught online only (no longer taught in person and online simultaneously). Antonio López is a Featured Presenter at the 10th Annual Symposium on Advancing the New Evangelization at Benedictine College in Atchison\, Kansas.  The event is held from March 19-20\, 2021\, with the theme “Destroyer of the gods: Christian Culture vs. the Idols of Secularism.” \nFr. López’s presentation\, “Without Beginning: Human Freedom and Divine Omnipotence\,” is held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday\, March 20. \n \nFr. López’s paper will seek to address the following questions: What conception of power allows for an adequate and free relation between God and man? How are we to conceive human power so that our relation with God is neither coercive nor merely optional? \nAt this annual conference\, scholars\, field professionals and students from around the world meet for a time to present papers based on their research and professional experiences. But the Christian city ought to be built according to a blueprint of love.\nThe conference\, titled “Founding the Christian Society\,” will articulate the theological\, metaphysical\, and political principles on which to build societies apart from the violent foundations of liberalism and upon the sure rock of the Gospel. DESCRIPTION:May 7\, 2021 \nThe editorial board of the English Critical Edition of the Works of Karol Wojtyła/John Paul II (ECE) is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 1 of the series: Person and Act and Related Essays (published by The Catholic University of America Press–order here). \n \nThis volume features an entirely new translation of the author’s seminal 1969 work Osoba i czyn\, along with related essays\, fragments\, and commentaries that were published by Wojtyła both before and after the main work. \nThe book includes introductions by Carl A. Anderson\, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus; Fr. Antonio López\, F.S.C.B.\, Provost/Dean of the John Paul II Institute and general editor of the ECE; and translator Dr. Grzegorz Ignatik\, assistant professor of theology at the Pontifical College Josephinum and editor of manuscripts of the ECE. \nThe ECE will eventually include at least 30 volumes\, which will collect all known pre-papal writings (both published and previously unpublished) and a thematic selection of papal writings. \nUpcoming volumes include: \n\nVolume 2: Lublin Lectures and Related Ethical Essays\nVolume 3: Toward Integral Anthropology and Ethics\nVolume 4: Moral Theology and Catholic Social Ethics

SUMMARY:Sexual Ethics: Online Intensive Course
DESCRIPTION:July 12\, 2021 — July 16\, 2021 \nThis one-week intensive course will study St. John Paul II/Karol Wojtyła’s teachings on Catholic sexual ethics\, by employing a novel approach: focusing on a positive account of the nature of the human person and conjugal/marital love structured as total\, reciprocal gift of self. For the Pope\, a proper understanding of the objective nature of conjugal love – considered in relation to marriage as a Christian state of life – illuminates the essence of the virtue of chastity. Drawing upon the Pope’s encyclical Veritatis Splendor\, students will gain a brief introduction to the foundational principles of Catholic moral theology: truth\, freedom\, conscience\, virtue\, law\, and the moral act. Furthermore\, special attention will be devoted to John Paul II’s distinct contributions such as the “personalistic norm” (from Love & Responsibility) and “the spousal meaning of the body” (from Theology of the Body). The primary goal is to help students think deeply these issues and be able to articulate the unifying thread: to act morally in the sexual sphere is simply to act with “responsibility” for the inviolable dignity of the human person and for the truth of love\, a truth that does not enslave but liberates us. \nThe course meets Monday through Friday\, July 12-16\, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.\, and 1:30-3:00 p.m. \nThe class fee is $150.
