DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 30\, at 4 p.m.\, philosopher John Milbank\, President of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham\, of will join Fr. Antonio López to discuss and debate his latest book: Gift and the Unity of Being. \nThe discussion will be followed by a reception. \nBelow is video footage from the event. \n  \nFrom the Publisher:\nStarting from both our originary experience of being given to ourselves and Jesus Christ’s archetypal self-donation\, Gift and the Unity of Being elucidates the sense in which gift is the form of being’s unity\, while unity itself constitutes the permanence of the gift of being. In dialogue with ancient and modern philosophers and theologians\, Lopez offers a synthetic\, rather than systematic\, account of the unity proper to being\, the human person\, God\, and the relations among them. The book shows how contemplation of the triune God of Love through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit allows us to discover the eternal communion that being is and to which finite being is called. This teaching\, particularly as it has been developed over the past hundred years\, offers a rich treasure of insights concerning the nature of man\, his eternal destiny\, the sanctity of marriage\, and the important role of the family in building a harmonious society. DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2018 course in the Institute’s ongoing Continuing Education Series will be “God and Creation.” \nWhat does it mean to be created? The goal of this class is to ponder this question in all its ontological meaning\, considering both Scripture and Tradition. Included in this question is the nature of the creator God (who he is and what he is like) and how he relates to his creation\, especially\, to the human person\, created male and female and made in his image. We will seek the Church’s teaching on creation first through the writings of the Church Fathers as synthesized in the work of Thomas Aquinas\, then through the philosophers of the Enlightenment such as Descartes\, Bacon\, and Locke\, and finally through the work of recent theologians such as Joseph Ratzinger\, Alexander Schmemann\, Louis Bouyer\, and Stratford Caldecott. \nFor more information\, call 202.526.3799 or email information@johnpaulii.edu. SUMMARY:The Body as Anticipatory Sign: Commemorating the Anniversaries of Humanae Vitae & Veritatis Splendor
DESCRIPTION:November 15\, 2018 — November 17\, 2018 \nAt least formally\, Paul VI’s Humanae vitae merely reaffirmed the Church’s perennial teaching. Yet its publication in late July of 1968 unleashed a torrent of criticism\, perhaps unprecedented in its violence. These events laid bare the profound estrangement of that teaching from modern\, liberal culture; it also provoked a fundamental ecclesial crisis. Misunderstanding and resistance to the teaching as a “discrete” norm of traditional sexual ethics could be anticipated. Less predictable perhaps were the fractures that emerged in wider and more obviously foundational areas of doctrine\, such as fundamental moral philosophy and theology\, philosophical and theological anthropology\, and even (eventually) sacramental theology and ecclesiology. Granted that the forces in play were larger than the debate over Paul VI’s encyclical\, the encyclical nevertheless appeared to unleash them. Why would such a seemingly minor part of Christian moral doctrine have such architectonic implications? \nTwenty-five years later\, Saint John Paul II attempted to remediate these fragmenting tendencies in his own landmark encyclical\, Veritatis splendor. John Paul’s purpose was to unearth bedrock of Catholic thought obscured at least in part by the tsunami following Humanae vitae. He addressed crucial issues in fundamental moral thought\, such as the relationship between freedom and truth\, conscience and objectivity\, moral thought and faith\, the body and natural law\, and nature and human action. DESCRIPTION:April 5 — 6\, 2019\nKeane Auditorium\, McGivney Hall \nIn honor of the recent appearance of Homo Abyssus: The Drama of the Question of Being\, the first translation of a major work by Ferdinand Ulrich into English\, the John Paul II Institute at The Catholic University of America is hosting a two-day symposium\, with scholars from around the world\, to present the book to a broader audience. \nAs one of the most profound exemplars of Catholic philosophy in the twentieth-century\, Homo Abyssus explores the meaning of being in the light of creation\, itself illuminated by the central mysteries of the Christian faith.  Ulrich grounds his reflections in a speculative interpretation of Thomas Aquinas\, which is fructified through a critical engagement with modern thought\, above all that of Hegel and Heidegger.  The result is a philosophy which Hans Urs von Balthasar said “has one great advantage over all the other ontologies with which I am familiar: It stands in intimate contact with the mysteries of revelation\, offers an access to them\, and yet never abandons the strictly philosophical domain.
