SUMMARY:Book Discussion: What Binds Marriage Forever
DESCRIPTION:The Catholic Information Center will host a book discussion on February 13 at 3:00 PM EST\, featuring Dr. Jonathan Bieler. He will explore What Binds Marriage Forever\, a work by Austrian author Ida Friederike Görres that offers a compelling reflection on the enduring nature of marriage and its indissolubility. \n \nIda Friederike Görres (1901–1971) was a prominent Catholic writer in German-speaking Europe. In his eulogy for her\, Fr. Joseph Ratzinger praised how Görres “spoke with an insightful certainty and a fearlessness about the pressing questions and tasks of the Church today.” In 2025\, Bishop Erik Varden called her\, “A crucial voice for the present moment.” \nFor more information and RSVP visit: https://cicdc.org/event/what-binds-marriage-forever/

SUMMARY:The Crisis of Authority
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Hanby\, associate professor of religion and philosophy of science\, will be one of the featured speakers at the 2023 Touchstone Conference on “The Crisis of Authority” on Oct. 12-14 in Deerfield\, IL. \nThe Touchstone conference brings together Protestant\, Roman Catholic\, and Eastern Orthodox Christians\, a tradition-bound gathering of what C. S. Lewis called “Mere Christianity” to address the question: The authority of God once formed the conscience of men; it bound our faith\, science\, law\, and our culture. Where and how have we cast the bands asunder\, and what comes next? \nAmong the conference’s other featured speakers are several past guest lecturers at the Institute\, including Douglas Farrow\, Ken Myers\, and R.V. Young\, as well as Rod Dreher\, R.R. Reno\, and others. \nStudent scholarships are available to help offset the cost of attendance. \n

SUMMARY:"Is Postliberalism Possible?"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Hanby and Dr. D.C. Schindler will lead an intellectual retreat for Stanford students on the nature\, origin\, and aims of liberalism at the Zephyr Institute. The Zephyr Institute is a community of scholars\, Stanford students\, and professionals committed to gaining a fuller understanding of the human person and the common good in Palo Alto\, California. \n  \nThe day-long event is titled “Is Postliberalism Possible?”  Sessions throughout the day are titled: \n\nWhat is Political Philosophy\, and How Has It Changed?\nWhat is Liberalism? Part One: Liberalism as a Theory of Human Nature\nWhat is Liberalism? Part Two: Liberalism as Technological Order\nThe Question of America\n\nThe day will conclude with a roundtable discussion with Matthew Crawford\, Nathan Pinkoski\, and Adrian Walker. \n  \nAbout the Event \nAn increasing number of political theorists claim that the great experiment of liberalism has failed\, and so conversation has begun in many quarters about what an alternative might look like\, the possibilities that something might takes its place\, and the resources from which to draw to attempt to do so. But proposing something genuinely new requires a sufficient sense of what liberalism in fact is and why it seems to have failed. This series of seminars will explore the nature\, origin\, and aims of liberalism and attempt to uncover the vision of reality and human nature that it takes for granted\, both in its classical form and in its specifically American incarnation. We will then consider some of the basic criticisms that have been made\, in order to prepare for a fruitful conversation about what might come next. \n  \nMore details about the event can be found on the Zephyr Institute website.

SUMMARY:“The Eucharist as Form: Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Theology of the Laity”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nicholas J. Healy\, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Culture\, will present at a conference at Ave Maria University titled “The Holiness of God and The Mystery of the Eucharist” presented by The Aquinas Center and St. Paul Center. \n  \nDr. Healy’s presentation is titled “The Eucharist as Form: Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Theology of the Laity.” \n \nAbout the Conference: \nFollowing the promulgation of their 2021 document\, The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church\, the Bishops of the United States have called for a national Eucharistic revival. Culminating three years of “grassroots revival of devotion and belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist\,” a national Eucharistic Congress will take place in 2024—the first of its kind in nearly 50 years. The Bishops “believe that God wants to see a movement of Catholics across the United States\, healed\, converted\, formed\, and unified by an encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist—and sent out in mission ‘for the life of the world.’” \nRecent years have witnessed a loss of the sense of God’s holiness and how the faithful enter into the mystery of God’s holiness in the Eucharist. When Moses encountered God in the burning bush\, he was told to remove his shoes for “the place where he was standing was holy ground.” When Isaiah described his vision of God\, he began with “holy\, holy\, holy.” John in Revelation describes Jesus as “the holy one\, the true one” and the new heavens and the new earth simply as “the holy city.” Standing at the heart of the mysteries of creation and redemption\, God’s holiness grounds the new covenant relationship established in Jesus Christ’s gift of himself in the Eucharist. \nThis conference invites theologians to draw upon the entire theological patrimony of the Catholic Church to rediscover and retrieve the revelation of God’s holiness and the mystery of the Eucharist. \nFull conference details available here.

SUMMARY:Putting Predestination in Its Place: An Answer to the Question “Why the World?”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Margaret McCarthy\, Associate Professor of Theological Anthropology\, will present at the de Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture Fall Conference at the University of Notre Dame on Friday\, November 11\, 2022.  The conference theme is “‘And It Was Very Good’: On Creation.” \n  \nThe title of her presentation is “Putting Predestination in Its Place: An Answer to the Question ‘Why the World?’.” \n \n  \nBelow is an abstract of Dr. McCarthy’s presentation. \nThe doctrine of predestination is well-known among theologians (not the laity). It concerns a limited number of souls led infallibly to salvation. Some say we must hold together principles which “appear” to be irreconcilable and wait until the eschaton for the resolution. But the mystery of predestination has been revealed. Predestination is the “mystery” establishing a good creation\, and a good (not inevitable) destiny for all men. \nFor full details\, visit the conference website.

SUMMARY:"The Transcendentals: Truth"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. D. C. Schindler\, Professor of Metaphysics and Anthropology\, will lead a seminar at The Kateri Institute for Catholic Studies in Ann Arbor\, Michigan.  His seminar is part of the Kateri Institute’s series “The Life of the Mind” with the transcendentals as this semester’s theme. \nEvent Description: \nThe Kateri Institute for Catholic Studies offers a home for faculty\, staff\, and students at the University of Michigan to integrate their studies with the Catholic intellectual tradition. \nThe Life of the Mind is about asking the “big questions” of existence. Why is the natural world so beautiful? Why does it have an intelligible order? Why is there a world at all? The series is also concerned with “meaning of life” questions that can be postponed (especially in our endlessly distracting society) but never completely eradicated. Why are we here? Why must we die? How should we live? In short\, the Life of the Mind series is devoted to contemplation of some of the most important questions ever asked. \nTruth. Beauty. Goodness. Throughout the centuries\, thinkers have called these cosmic values transcendentals because they were believed to exist universally beyond space\, time\, matter\, and history\, and because all human beings longed to know them. In the classical world\, the transcendentals were understood to harmonize the soul with a well-ordered universe\, a prerequisite to human flourishing. Medieval thinkers associated the transcendentals with the triune God of Christianity and believed that human beings\, as imago Dei\, possessed an innate ability to know truth\, love beauty\, and desire goodness. How do these values look to us now? How might they speak to our intellectual\, aesthetic\, and ethical lives as students\, teachers\, and citizens of the world? This series will examine the transcendentals as a category of thought that is just as important now as it ever was. Indeed\, they make life worth living. \n  \nFor more details\, visit The Kateri Institute for Catholic Studies website.

SUMMARY:What’s New about the New Totalitarianism?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Hanby\, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy of Science\, will present at Touchstone Magazine’s 2022 fall conference titled “Something Wicked This Way Comes: Diabolical Fantasies & the Mystery of the Real.” \nDr. Hanby’s talk entitled “What’s New about the New Totalitarianism?” will be on Thursday\, October 13\, 2022 at 7:50 p.m. (Central Time).  The conference will take place at Trinity International University in Deerfield\, IL. \nOther featured speakers include Hans Boersma\, Allan Carlson\, Rod Dreher\, Joshua Mitchell\, Carl Trueman\, and R.V. Young. \nConference Description: \nA diabolical fantasy is a false image that presents itself as something real. “Transgender woman” and “gay marriage” are two obvious examples of diabolical fantasies that mean to replace the reality of sex and marriage in God’s created order. Christians must disentangle ourselves from the unrealities of our age because “by the pricking of my thumbs\, something wicked this way comes.” \nThe Touchstone conference brings together Protestant\, Roman Catholic\, and Eastern Orthodox Christians\, a tradition-bound gathering of what C. S. Lewis called “Mere Christianity.” \n  \nVideo footage from Dr. Hanby’s presentation has been made available on the Touchstone website here.

SUMMARY:Catholicity as Gift and Task: 50th Anniversary of Communio Conference
DESCRIPTION:Institute faculty members will present at the conference “Catholicity as Gift and Task: The 50th Anniversary of Communio: International Catholic Review.”  The conference is hosted by St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry in Rochester\, NY. \nDr. Nicholas J. Healy\, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Culture\, will speak on “Joseph Ratzinger on the Unity of the Roman Rite and the Unity of the Church.” \nDr. Margaret Harper McCarthy\, Associate Professor of Theological Anthropology\, will present “Putting Predestination in its Place.” \nKeynote speakers for the conference include Jean Duchesne\, Jean-Luc Marion\, Tracey Rowland\, and Rev. Jacques Servais\, S.J. \n \nSeveral John Paul II Institute graduates will also present at the conference: \n\nLisa Lickona (M.T.S. ’93\, S.T.L. ’98): “Love Acknowledged: The Ressourcement of Spirituality Through a Friendship with the Saints”\nMark Banga (M.T.S. ’18\, current Ph.D. Candidate): “Joseph Ratzinger’s Communio Liturgical Theology: Illuminating the Issue of Communion for the Divorced and Remarried”\nDaniel Drain (M.T.S. ’16\, current Ph.D. Candidate): “For What May We Hope? Hans Urs von Balthasar and the Church’s Ecclesial Task”\nMatthew Kuhner (M.T.S. ’13): “Papal Resignation as Theological Event? On Benedict XVI\, the Petrine Ministry\, and the Nature of Ecclesial Office”\nErik van Versendaal (Ph.D. ’19): “Formed in and for Communion: Philosophy and the Salvation of the World”\n\n  \nVirtual registration is available here. \n  \nBelow is the conference description from St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry: \n\n\n“Only by assuming a non-polemic role of tranquility in the center will it be possible to assume genuine responsibility for the whole.”\n– The Mission of Communio \n\n\n\n\nIn the mission statement for Communio: International Catholic Review\, Hans Urs von Balthasar set forth a vision that he and the other founders hoped would inform a print journal and give shape to a theological movement born from the heart of the Church. For Balthasar\, Communio set out to “fight at all costs against the deadly polarization brought on by the fervor displayed by traditionalists and modernists alike” and “to perceive of the Church as a central communion\, a community that originated from communion with Christ\, who presented himself as a gift to the Church; as a communion that will enable us to share our hearts\, thoughts\, and blessings.” \nGiven the persistent relevance of this mission\, the upcoming anniversary seems an appropriate moment to consider the theological and cultural engagement of a journal that is now realized in 14 language-editions around the world. \nThe purpose of the conference is three-fold: \n\nTo understand and appreciate the contribution of Communio to the Church over the past fifty years\nTo continue and further the trajectories of theological and cultural engagement present in the pages of Communio\nTo ponder the same questions posed by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger in 1992 after Communio’s first twenty years: “Have we been courageous enough? … Have we really spoken the Word of faith intelligibly and reached the hearts of a hungering world?”

SUMMARY:“The Form of Christian Thought: A Balthasarian Proposal”
DESCRIPTION:April 30\, 2022 (9:00am – 11:00am)\nSt. Patrick’s Pontifical University\, Maynooth\, Ireland \nOn April 30\, 2022\, Dr. D.C. Schindler will present at an international conference entitled\, “The Future of Christian Thinking” at St. Patrick’s Pontifical University in Maynooth\, Ireland. \nDr. Schindler’s presentation is entitled “The Form of Christian Thought: A Balthasarian Proposal.” \nOther featured speakers include Rowan Williams\, David Bentley Hart\, Eleonore Stump\, Robert George\, John Milbank\, Cyril O’Regan\, William Desmond\, Fr. Thomas Joseph White\, and Francesca Aran Murphy. \nDescription of the conference theme:\nToday\, perhaps more than ever before\, Christian thought faces unprecedented challenges; ranging from a denial of metaphysics\, to previously unforeseen ethico-moral questions arising from contemporary science and ever-advancing technologies\, to a full-blown economizing of the political\, to name just some of the most obvious. Couple this with the fact that amongst Christian thinkers there is no real consensus on the meaning\, definition and end of Christian thinking and the future of Christian thinking looks hazy\, unclear and tenuous. \nThe theme of this conference seeks to think from out of these unprecedented challenges while\, simultaneously\, straining to look into a nebulous and unforeseen future. In order to do this\, a vast array of many of the foremost thinkers engaged with Christian thought and beyond have been invited to speak on these issues. These thinkers are representative of many different schools\, approaches and styles of Christian thought\, across confessional divides. The vast array of thinkers invited is itself a testimony of the polyphonic vitality of Christian thought today and\, together\, the ever-pressing question of the future of Christian thinking will be pondered from within an intellectually polyphonic and ecumenical conversation and perspective.

SUMMARY:“Thomism and Contemporary Ideologies”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael Hanby will be a plenary speaker the 45th annual meeting of the American Maritain Association with a presentation titled\, “The Interior Schism: On the Unresolved Question of the Church in the Modern World.” The AMA conference topic is “Thomism and Contemporary Ideologies.” \nThe conference will be held from Thursday\, April 7 to Saturday\, April 9\, 2022\, at DeSales University in Center Valley\, PA. \n \nThe following alumni are also presenting during the conference’s concurrent sessions. \n\nDr. William R. Hamant (Ph.D. ’12): “The Imagination and the Imago Dei”\nMr. Daniel A. Drain (M.T.S. ’16\, current Ph.D. candidate): “Anima Technica Vacua: Modern Man in Jacques Maritain\, Robert Spaemann\, and Ferdinand Ulrich”\n\nBelow is the American Maritain Association’s Description of the Conference Topic: \nJacques Maritain is often considered a critic of modernity. We would do better\, however\, to see his work as engaging the disorders of modern philosophy and its drift into ideology. He begins his seminal The Degrees of Knowledge—which celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2022—by noting that the failure of modern philosophies lie in their neglect of being. Lacking a foundation in reality\, the moderns too often presume reality to be obedient to the mind and the will of man. This pervasive error leads them to a Babel of divergent worldviews. In doing so\, it frustrates the human drive for truth. As Maritain affirms\, “What we need is not truths that serve us but a truth we may serve.” In advancing the commission of Aeterni Patris\, he argues that only by centering ourselves in the realism of St. Thomas can we find a sure ground for both the person and society. \nMany of the distortions that Maritain fought—nominalism\, idealism\, collectivism—are still with us. Yet these have been joined by new and unexpected ideologies arising from the ever more adamant refusals to engage being. We cannot ignore the pressing practical problems associated with these ideologies.

SUMMARY:“God and the City: On Religion as a Res Publica” Lecture
DESCRIPTION:January 28\, 2022 (7:30 p.m. CST)\nUniversity of Dallas \nDr. D. C. Schindler will present the Aquinas Lecture\, “God and the City: On Religion as a Res Publica” at the University of Dallas on January 28\, 2022\, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CST)\, 8:30 p.m. (EST).  The university’s philosophy department is hosting the event in SB Hall’s multi-purpose room. \nBefore his presentation\, Dr. Schindler will host an informative session for students interested in the mission of the John Paul II Institute from 3-4:00 p.m. (CST) in the Braniff Building\, Room 301. \n \nBelow is a brief history of the University of Dallas Aquinas Lecture: \nSince 1982\, the Philosophy Department has hosted an annual Aquinas Lecture. In the spirit of St. Thomas Aquinas himself\, the goal of the lecture series is to develop contemporary Catholic thought in close dialogue with the tradition—above all\, of course\, with Aquinas’s own work. The speakers invited have covered a broad spectrum of Thomism\, some attempting to defend traditional teachings against contemporary challenges\, others endeavoring to develop Thomism in more of a give and take with current ideas. One important feature of the Aquinas Lecture has to do with the events surrounding it: the Aquinas Lecturer is usually invited to stay in Irving for a few days\, teach a seminar on a text of his or her choice\, share meals with faculty\, and speak informally with students. This creates the opportunity for the community to engage in a genuine exchange\, rather than just listening to an individual lecture. The Aquinas Lecture and most of the events associated with it are open to the general public. \nSee video footage from this event:

SUMMARY:“Catholic Politics and the Analogy of Authority”
DESCRIPTION:March 20\, 2021\nLeonardo’s Coffeehouse\, Steubenville\, Ohio \nDr. D.C. Schindler will present a lecture on “Catholic Politics and the Analogy of Authority” on Saturday\, March 20th at 9:30am at a conference hosted by New Polity. \n  \nFrom the New Polity website: \n\nLiberal societies confuse man’s relationship with God and neighbor; they establish civic peace through fear instead of justice; they follow a “city plan” of violence. But the Christian city ought to be built according to a blueprint of love.\nThe conference\, titled “Founding the Christian Society\,” will articulate the theological\, metaphysical\, and political principles on which to build societies apart from the violent foundations of liberalism and upon the sure rock of the Gospel. To this end\, we are organizing our conference around the state and the economy—asking what they would be like as reformed by Christianity.\n\n  \nClick here to register for in-person attendance or to register for digital access.

SUMMARY:“For Freedom Set Free”: Retrieving Genuine Religious Liberty
DESCRIPTION:October 11\, 2019 (7:30pm – 9:00pm)\nAll Saints Anglican Church: 3889 Ivy Road\, Charlottesville\, VA 22903 \n“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore\, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galations 5:1 \nThe Fall 2019 Areopagus Lecture at All Saints Anglican Church will feature Dr. D.C. Schindler on the Christian understanding of religious liberty. \n \nThe Areopagus Lectures are sponsored by MARS HILL AUDIO to promote a deeper understanding of the theological resources needed to live faithfully amid the challenges of a post-Christian society. \nReligious liberty is one of the founding principles of the American political order\, and it also lies at the center of Christian existence. But is the meaning of liberty the same in the two contexts? This lecture will argue that not only are these two senses of liberty different\, but that they in fact sit uneasily together. In order to see why there is a tension between them\, Professor Schindler will spend some time filling out the content of the distinctively Christian notion of freedom\, which arises out of the confluence of three traditions: that of the Jews\, the Greeks\, and the Romans. Professor Schindler will then compare this to the particular notion of freedom embedded in the right to religious liberty as it is generally conceived today. Given the difference between these two approaches\, attempts to protect Christian existence in the contemporary world through appeals to religious liberty threaten to do more harm than good. The challenges we face today call for a return to genuine first principles—not just those of the American founders—and a fundamental rethinking of the basic realities of Christian\, and indeed of human\, existence.  The contribution of the classical philosophical tradition\, because it proceeds and orients itself precisely from first principles\, will prove to be indispensable in this regard. \nPlease RSVP for the event at https://marshillaudio.org/areopagus. \nThis lecture’s recording is available for purchase from Mars Hill Audio. \nPoster image: The Crucified Christ by Rubens
