Coordinator for Catechist Formation, Sacramental Preparation, and OCIA, Diocese of Columbus, OH

Under the supervision of the Department Director for Evangelization and Catechesis the Coordinator for Catechist Formation, Sacramental Preparation, and OCIA seeks to share the Lord’s mission in the areas of; catechist formation, sacramental preparation and formation, and the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA). The Associate Director will provide training, resources, assistance, and collaboration to clergy, parishes, and lay leaders in the areas of; the ministry of catechist, sacramental preparation and formation which includes marriage preparation and enrichment, and guide all who desire to come into full communion with the Catholic Church through the OCIA process.    

Responsibilities of the Position:

  1. Build positive and fruitful relationships with clergy and parish staff and support them with all aspects of catechist, sacramental, and OCIA formation.
  2. Research and remain informed on best practices and programs for catechist and sacramental formation, OCIA training and formation, and what is being done throughout the Diocese.
  3. Train clergy and parish staff in areas of Catechist Formation, Sacramental Preparation, and OCIA based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the General Directory for Catechesis, the Directory for Catechesis, and all applicable Church documents.  
  4. Train and offer ongoing formation, support, and encouragement for the parish OCIA preparation teams. 
  5. Assist parishes in onboarding and implementing approved Catechist, Sacramental Preparation, and OCIA formation resources. 
  6. Assist independent ministries and apostolates as appropriate to the ministry of catechists.
  7. Create resources for catechists through various social media channels, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. 
  8. Represent the Department of Evangelization at local, regional, and national events.  
  9. Collaborate on all Diocesan Department of Evangelization projects and initiatives.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Evangelization, Family Studies, or related field is required. Master’s highly preferred.

Experience: Five to seven years prior experience in parish ministry or a diocesan setting is preferred; bi-lingual is a plus.

  5. Proven management skills and the ability to train and coach others.
  6. Take initiative and exhibit creativity, responsibility, and flexibility.
  7. Possess responsible organizational skills, can track numerous projects/people, multi-task, and establish priorities.
  8. Exercises discretion and maintains confidentiality when necessary.
  9. Proficiency with all basic office equipment, including Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Excel), as well as the ability to use audio/visual equipment.
  10. Ability to lift and transport heavy objects regularly (where/if applicable).
